Two ski areas lie only about an hour south of Vienna: the Zauberberg on the Semmering and the Stuhleck in Styria. Your driver collects you at your hotel, loads your skis or snowboard and, if you book waiting time, stays nearby until the lifts close and drives you back to Vienna in the early evening.

Train, rental car or private driver?

Without a car: Railjet trains stop at Semmering station every two hours (semmering.at) and a post bus runs to the Stuhleck lifts (stuhleck.at). That suits travellers with light luggage.

A rental car needs winter equipment in snow, slush or ice from 1 November to 15 April under Austrian law (ÖAMTC), and you drive back yourself after skiing, often in the dark.

With a driver you leave when it suits you, load your gear once at the hotel and rest on the way back.

A ski day from Vienna, step by step

An example for the Zauberberg, using the lift times of winter 2025/26 and assuming no traffic jams:

8:00 am: pick-up at your hotel; skis and boots go into the vehicle.
Around 9:15 am: arrival at the valley station. Your driver drops you as close as the rules allow; the lifts start at 9 am.
During the day: you ski while your driver waits nearby; drivers do not teach or guide.
4:00 pm: the lifts close.
Around 4:15 pm: departure.
Around 5:30 pm: back at your hotel, later with snowfall or weekend traffic.

You book these seven hours as waiting time in the calculator, counted from your arrival at the ski area. The fixed fare covers the outward drive from Vienna: €207 in Premium or €231 in Premium Van, per vehicle, not per person. With the seven waiting hours and the drive back, the day comes to €515 or €595. You pay online in advance when you book.

Zauberberg or Stuhleck: which ski area?

Zauberberg (Hirschenkogel)

About 95 km and 1 hour 10 minutes from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, by our own route calculation without traffic. An 8-seater gondola and a 4-seater chairlift serve 14 km of slopes, 13 km of them floodlit (semmering.com). In winter 2025/26 the lifts ran daily from 9 am to 4 pm, with night skiing from 6 to 9 pm, Thursday to Saturday and daily in some weeks (operating hours). Dates for 2026/27 have not been published yet.

Stuhleck

About 100 km and 1 hour 15 minutes (stuhleck.at says about 100 km and one hour). Four chairlifts, seven drag lifts and lifts for children. In 2025/26 the lifts ran from 8:30 am to 4 pm (operating hours). The 2026/27 opening date has not been published yet.

Not a skier? Snow without skis

Zauberberg: the gondola also carries walkers and tobogganers, and a 3 km toboggan run is open by day and in the evening; toboggans can be rented (semmering.com).
Stuhleck, tobogganing: a 5 km natural toboggan run with sled rental at the valley station. It relies on natural snow, without snowmaking (stuhleck.at).
Stuhleck, winter hiking: three suggested routes; snowshoes and poles can be rented from the ski rental shops (stuhleck.at).

Vehicles for families, ski clubs and company groups

Premium: up to 3 guests.
Premium Van, e.g. Mercedes V-Class or similar: up to 8 guests. See V-Class with chauffeur.
Sprinter: up to 18 guests. See minibus with driver.
Coach: up to 52 guests. See coach with driver.

Premium and Premium Van vehicles pick you up at the hotel door; Sprinter and Coach groups board as close to your hotel as the rules allow.

How many ski and snowboard bags fit depends on their size and your group, so we confirm it on request. List your equipment in the “Note” field when you book; renting at the resort means less to carry.

The outward fare to the Zauberberg is €519 by Sprinter and €1.479 by Coach. Waiting time and the return trip can be added in the calculator.

Snow, weather and cancellations

No snow guarantee. The Zauberberg operator runs 94 snow guns, but each resort decides which lifts and slopes open. Check the snow report the evening before on semmering.com or stuhleck.at.
Cancellation: our cancellation terms also apply when snow is thin or lifts stay closed: up to 7 days before the trip a fee of 10 % (90 % refunded); after that the fixed price remains payable in principle (see section 7 of our terms).
Lift closures due to storms: if the resort closes all its lifts because of a storm, we rebook your trip to another day free of charge. Just let us know your new preferred date.

How much does a ski day trip from Vienna cost?

To the Zauberberg: €207 (Premium) or €231 (Premium Van) one way, €515 or €595 with seven hours of waiting time and the drive back, per vehicle. For the Stuhleck and other ski areas, see your fixed price instantly in the calculator above; all vehicle classes are on our prices page.

Does the driver wait all day?

Yes, if you book waiting time: 2 to 8 hours in the calculator, counted from your arrival at the ski area. Need several stops in one day? Book a chauffeur for a day.

Where can I rent skis and boots?

Both resorts list rental shops at the lifts: rental at the Zauberberg and rental at the Stuhleck.

Do you provide child seats?

Tell us the children’s ages by phone or WhatsApp before you book, and we will confirm whether and which child seats we can provide.

What happens if the lifts are closed?

There is no snow guarantee. If the resort closes all its lifts because of a storm, we rebook your trip to another day free of charge; just let us know your new preferred date. In all other cases, and if you cancel instead of rebooking, our cancellation terms apply. For any other change of date, contact us early and we will check whether another date is free.

A single vehicle can be booked and paid directly in the calculator. For several vehicles, a company ski day or a lot of equipment, send us the date, ski area, pick-up address, number of guests and luggage.
