Four Christmas market day trips from Vienna: three in Austria and one across the border in Slovakia. They lead to the baroque estate of Schloss Hof, the castle park at Grafenegg, the old town of Bratislava and the villages on Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee). In a car or van the day starts at your hotel door; your chauffeur waits for the hours you have booked and drives you home after dark. Larger groups travel by Sprinter or coach.
The day has three parts: the drive out at the time you pick, a few hours among the stalls, and the ride back, usually after dark. You are dropped as close to the market as the rules allow; your chauffeur then waits nearby, and gifts and bags travel home with you in the vehicle.
Your chauffeur picks you up again where you were dropped off, so please be there at the agreed time and reachable by phone; a different pick-up point must be agreed with us in advance. Travelling with children? Tell us their ages by phone or WhatsApp before you book, and we will confirm whether and which child seats we can provide.
Your chauffeur drives and waits but does not guide. For a licensed guide, see our private guided tours from Vienna; other destinations are under day trips from Vienna.
Each market name links to the official page of the organiser or tourist board, the place to look for last-minute changes.

Times are for normal traffic, based on the organisers, tourist boards and a route planner. Snow, rush hour and the border add time.
| Destination | Distance | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Schloss Hof | about 60 km | about one hour |
| Grafenegg | about 60 km | about 50 minutes |
| Bratislava | about 80 km | about one hour |
| Wolfgangsee | about 285 km | three to three and a half hours |
The first three suit an afternoon or a half day. For the Wolfgangsee you spend six to seven hours in the car there and back, so it takes a full day; the best arrival time is explained in the questions below.
Seats per vehicle, as in our booking calculator:
Sprinter and coach groups board as close to the hotel as Vienna’s coach rules allow, which are strict in the old town and on Advent Saturdays. If your group needs more than one vehicle, send us an enquiry.
All vehicle classes and hourly rates are on our prices page.
Bratislava’s markets fill the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square and stay open until 10 pm, which suits an evening visit. Although both countries belong to the Schengen area, Austria has notified the European Commission of checks at its border with Slovakia from 16 September 2026 to 15 March 2027. Bring the travel documents described in the questions below and allow extra time, especially on the way back into Austria.
The outward drive from Vienna costs €167 (Premium), €183 (Premium Van), €415 (Sprinter) or €1.183 (Coach). With four hours in the city and the drive back, it is €343 (Premium) or €391 (Premium Van). More about the city is on our Bratislava day trip from Vienna page.
In December 2026 the sun sets in Vienna at around 4 pm. If you want to see the markets lit up, the drive home will be in the dark, which is when it helps not to drive yourself.
Plan to arrive with some daylight left, stay on as the lights come up, and dress for several hours outdoors.
Everyone needs a valid travel document while Austria checks the border. A national ID card is enough for citizens of the EU, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland; all other guests carry their passport and any visa they need.
It is possible but long: three to three and a half hours each way. The calculator offers up to 8 hours of waiting time, and the walk back to the car counts too: to stay until the stalls close at 7.30 pm, arrive no earlier than about 12 noon. You will then be back in Vienna well after 10 pm. Time beyond the booked hours is charged extra under our terms. Sprinter and coach days are planned within the driver’s legal driving and rest times; please send an enquiry.
Schloss Hof and Grafenegg do, and tickets are sold by the organisers. The Lake Wolfgangsee Advent advertises free entry.
